Meningism
As meningism (also: meningeal syndrome) the symptom of painful stiffness of the neck is called in irritation and diseases of the meninges. He is a reflex tension of the neck muscles in response to pain, in total unconsciousness ( coma ), it dissolves again. At a meningeal irritation syndrome also include nausea and vomiting until light and noise sensitivity (photo / phonophobia ).
Following clinical signs are typically the Meningism also positive:
- Brudzinski sign
- Kernig's sign
- Lasègue characters
Diseases
Typical diseases with meningism are:
- Meningitis ( meningitis )
- Subarachnoid hemorrhage
- Carcinomatous meningitis
- Septicopyemia
- Sunstroke
- Pneumococcal pneumonia (possibly somnolence & meningism )
- Sinus thrombosis
Differential Diagnosis
Painful stiffness of the neck can also be caused by non- meningeal causes, they will be more neutral than " neck flexor pain " means. For differential diagnosis are:
- Herniated disc in the cervical spine
- Arthrosis in the cervical vertebral joints
- Migraine
- Fractures of the cervical vertebrae
- Tumor
- Rigor
- Tonsillitis
