Menterwolde

( Listen? / I ) Menterwolde is a municipality in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It has 12,378 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013) on an area of ​​82 km ².

The community was founded only in 1990, after an administrative reform in the province. The communities Muntendam and Meeden were dissolved and merged with Oosterbroek. A year later changed the name in Menterwolde.

Location and economic

The municipality is located on the border between the fertile farming area Oldambt with his fat clay soils ( Noordbroek, Meeden ) and the southern marsh area stretching from Fehnkolonien ( Borger and Tripscompagnie, Zuidbroek ) is embossed. The village Meeden lies halfway between the city of Groningen and Neuschanz on the German border. Neighboring communities in the West Hoogezand- Sappemeer, in the north Slochteren, in the south and the east Veendam Winschoten. The A7 motorway Groningen - Winschoten - Leer ( East Frisia) and the railway between the same cities thwart the community. In Zuidbroek is a small station.

Zuidbroek, a former industrial site, and Muntendam have some commercial ( among other materials and services for the building and repairing of ships ) and trade. Also there are two hotels, especially for travelers. However, the most important source of income is agriculture. Many residents commute to work in nearby cities.

History

Muntendam built in the 13th century as a settlement on a dam in the Munter. This was a small river that no longer exists now and culminated in Termunterzijl in the Wadden Sea. The ancient trade route from Groningen to Westphalia was in the late Middle Ages through the villages Zuidbroek and Muntendam. By 1600, the village of Muntendam was on a small hill, as if on an island in the swampy, often flooded by the Dollard Moor. In 1637 a channel called Munter Dammer Diep was dug. That brought the village recovery: near had rich people, among others from the Dutch regent family trip started to leave mine peat in the bog. Many workers this bog colonization settled in Muntendam and the new peat Tripscompagnie and Zuidbroek. The verhaltnismäßige bloom lasted until about 1820. As of 1920 there were better job, so in Zuidbroeker and Veendamer factories, with decent wages, and poverty was less bad.

  • In Zuidbroek there is the North Dutch tram and railway museum ( NNTTM ). It is located in the station building of Zuidbroek.
  • In Noordbroek a medieval church stands in the Romano- Gothic style with a built in 1696 Arp Schnitger organ.
