Traffic

The city is a transportation hub in the southwest of the province. From here there are links to Arnhem, Groningen and Leeuwarden. The motorways and railway lines from Amersfoort - Zwolle to Groningen and Leeuwarden here separate. This also applies to inland navigation. Here the Meppelerdiep, the Drentsche Hoofdvaart and Hoogeveense Vaart start direction Zwartewaterland, Assen and Hoogeveen. The Meppelerdiep is suitable for vessels up to 2,000 tons.

Industry

The place came from about 1600 through the peat in Drenthe and the related shipping to flower and has since been a not insignificant market town remained.

Meppel is now a regional center with many smaller industrial and commercial establishments. There is also a large printing company. The livestock and agriculture are also of great importance.

Attractions

In the city center, the main attraction is the church, with parts dating from the 15th and 16th centuries and a beautiful organ.
