Mequinenza

Mequinenza ( Catalan: Mequinensa ) is a municipality in the comarca of Bajo Cinca. She's not the only municipality of the comarca of the province of Huesca, but the province of Zaragoza. Located in the extreme east of the province at the confluence of the rivers Ebro and Segre municipality on 1 January 2013 had 2436 inhabitants.

History

In the municipality there are several archaeological sites. In Roman times here stood the old Octogesa, which was captured in the decline of the Roman Empire by the Goths, but came to 714 to the Berber tribe of the Miknasa from which is derived the place name. In the Berber time, the castle was built. In the Reconquista a first, but in the long run of unsuccessful conquest attempt took place in 1133 by King Alfonso el Batallador. 1149 came Mequinenza thing of Aragon. In the Middle Ages the town was under the rule of Montcada, ordered to be built a new castle on the height. 1348 Mequinenza was ravaged by the plague. In the time of Napoleon General Louis Gabriel Suchet in 1810 conquered the place, which is on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris called. During the Spanish Civil War, it came in the second half of 1938 fighting during the Battle of the Ebro, where the bridge was destroyed. In 1957 the diocese of Lleida Mequinenza to the diocese of Saragossa. Since 1957, the Embalse de Mequinenza was built and the construction of the dam in the old place ( " Poble Vell " ) was canceled. The new site was built on a regular plan on the right bank of the Segre.

The economy is based on commercial Mequinenzas, niedergehendem mining (lignite ), textile industry; Livestock (pigs and poultry), almond, olive, fruit ( cherries and peaches) and grain farming and tourism ( sport fishing, water sports in the Embalse de Mequinenza and Pantà de Riba -Roja ).
