Meratus

Meratus is a sacred mountain and a mountain range in the southeast of the island of Borneo (Indonesia).

The Meratus Mountains runs in a north-south arc and divides the province of South Kalimantan into two parts. The eastern part of the province is mountainous and covered with tropical rainforest. The indigenous Dayak here are in the minority. The region in the south is much flatter, has wide and long rivers that meander through the lowlands and wetlands. Is the Kusan mountain range on its southern foothills. The Meratus mountain range rises to the east and then connects to the lowlands along the coast. To the west it ends in a marshy basin, which was formed by the River Negara. The East is also characterized by many bays.

In the 1990s, 350 orangutans were released into the reserve of the Meratus of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation.

The highest elevation of the Meratus Mountains is the mountain Gunung Besar with a height of 1892 m (2 ° 42 ' 39 " S, 115 ° 37' 33" E - 2.7108333333333115.625833333331892 ).
