Merbromin is a fluorescent triphenylmethane and xanthene dye, similar to eosin and fluorescein.
Use
The mercury-containing dye was previously ( prior to 2003 ) in Germany, distributed in the form of a two percent aqueous solution as an antiseptic (trade name Mercuchrom ).
It was a long time popular as an antiseptic for treating skin injuries such as cuts and scrapes, but is today because of its mercury content ( toxic if absorbed, environmental impact ) controversial and no longer available as a finished product and also as a recipe in Germany. Medical publications speak for part of a more relevant effect.
Mercurochrome is the American and French drug name, Mercuchrom it was in Germany and Switzerland.
As a modern alternative is suggested in many cases Octenidine.
