Mercaz HaRav Kook

Merkas HaRaw Kook (Hebrew מרכז הרב קוק, to German: Rabbi Kook - Center ) is a national- religious yeshiva in Jerusalem, Israel. She is considered one of the most famous religious schools. (The Mercaz Harav rabbinic college is the most prominent yeshiva in the religious Zionist world. ) After the death of its founder, Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, it was renamed in 1935 in honor of him.

History

The school was founded in 1924 by Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, the. Rabbi Avraham Borstein, first head of the yeshiva. However, he died two years after taking up his duties. Kooks student, Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Harlap succeeded him as head of the yeshiva. After his death in 1951, Rabbi Zvi Yehuda Kook him followed after. After his death in 1982, Rabbi Avraham Shapira took the position. He led the establishment until his death in 2007. His son, Rabbi Yaakov Shapira succeeded him as successor.

Today the yeshiva has about 500 students, including 200 students in yeshivas kollel.

In its first decades of the yeshiva had few students, and sometimes it was not clear whether the institution would survive. The turning point came in the 1950s, flocked as graduates of religious schools and high schools of the Bnei Akiva to the Merkas HaRaw the only Zionist yeshiva.

The head of Bnei Akiva was Rabbi Moshe Zvi Neria, a pupil of Abraham Isaac Kook. He urged his students on to go to Merkas HaRaw.
