Merced County, California

Merced County ( [ mərsɛd ] ) is a county located in the center of the U.S. state of California. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Merced.

Geography

The County is located north of Fresno and southeast of San Jose and has a total area of ​​5107 square kilometers. Of these, 112 square kilometers of water (2.19 percent). It is bordered clockwise to the counties: Stanislaus County, Mariposa County, Madera County, Fresno County, San Benito County and Santa Clara County.

History

Merced County was established in 1855 from parts of Mariposa County. 1856 parts were outsourced to the Fresno County. It takes its name from the Merced River, which flows through the county.

According to the census of 2000, there were 210 554 people in Merced County. There were 63 815 households and 49 775 families. The population density was 42 people per square kilometer.
