Merced County, California
Merced County ( [ mərsɛd ] ) is a county located in the center of the U.S. state of California. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Merced.
Geography
The County is located north of Fresno and southeast of San Jose and has a total area of 5107 square kilometers. Of these, 112 square kilometers of water (2.19 percent). It is bordered clockwise to the counties: Stanislaus County, Mariposa County, Madera County, Fresno County, San Benito County and Santa Clara County.
History
Merced County was established in 1855 from parts of Mariposa County. 1856 parts were outsourced to the Fresno County. It takes its name from the Merced River, which flows through the county.

According to the census of 2000, there were 210 554 people in Merced County. There were 63 815 households and 49 775 families. The population density was 42 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.21 % White, 3.83 % African American, 1.19 % Native American, 6.80 % Asian, 0.19 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 26.13% from other races groups; 5.65% were descended from two or more races. 45.34 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 63 815 households out of which 45.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.80 % were married couples living together, 14.10% had a female householder with no husband. 22.00% were non-families. 17.70 % of all households and 7.40% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.25 and the average family size was 3.69 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread out with 34.50 % under the age of 18, 10.30 % from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44 years, 17.80% between 45 and 64 years and 9.50% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 99.30 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.60 males.
The median income for a household was $ 35,532, and the median income for a family was $ 38,009. Males had a median income of $ 31,721, women $ 23,911. The per capita income was $ 14,257. 21.70% percent of the population and 16.90 % of families are below the poverty line. 28.40% of those under age 18 and 10.70% were 65 years or older.
