Mercedes-Benz Actros

Actros is the name for a truck series of Mercedes- Benz Daimler AG. He was the successor to the advanced class (SK) introduced at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 1996 and therefore initially referred to as severity class new, short SKN. In the years 2003 and 2008 involved extensive facelift, also called MP 2 and MP 3 (Model Project 2 and 3 ) are known. First generation (since 1996)

Actros MP2

Since the predecessor SK after 20 years of construction was considered technically and despite several facelifts visually outdated, the introduction of the new model was preferred. As a result, Mercedes -Benz hoped to counteract the declining sales in the heavy truck segment. However, to bring the vehicle to market quickly, the manufacturer initially took a few components such as the rear axle from the predecessor model, although these modules with the model change also would have to be renewed. About a year after launch older components have been replaced with newly developed aggregates.

With the many areas completely newly developed Mercedes-Benz Actros resulted in a big way, the electronic control and networking ( CAN bus) a in commercial vehicle. In addition to the motor control of the Actros received a new transmission control, an electronically controlled brake system, and a flexible maintenance system ( in cars called Assyst ). All these components are part of the Telligent strategy. Parallel to the new Actros its predecessor SK was further offered until 1998.

Although initially well received in the trade press, soon came first criticisms to days. These included, inter alia, initially perceived as cheap classified interior appearance and immature than details. The first Actros (MP 1) also had to fight after launch with numerous technical problems and therefore was longer than immature. Technical innovations

Among the innovations in model implementation were:

Equipment

The Actros was the first truck from Mercedes -Benz, which was created through close cooperation between designers and aerodynamic engineers. Compared to the previous model SK the manufacturer was able to reduce drag by 17%.

First, the Actros was available with three different cab variants. The short S-cab had an exterior length of 1.70 m, while the average M-cab was 1.95 m long. Both versions have an internal height of 1.56 m. The long L- cab as the largest variant had 2.20 m Length 1.92 m inner height. The L-cab was also available with a continuous level cab floor as Megaspace version and was stored correspondingly higher than the three smaller versions.

Depending on the application are chassis with two, three or four axles with optional air suspension on all axles for election. Overall, between 3300 mm and 6300 mm wheelbase can be selected. The construction versions of the Actros ( presented in autumn 1997) are available with wheelbases between 3300 mm and 5100 mm. In these variants, the front axle can be equipped with leaf or air suspension, the rear axle is always provided with parabolic leaf springs.

In contrast to road vehicles with ventilated disc brakes on all axles, construction vehicles were equipped with 4x2 on the rear axle with drum brakes; Vehicles with more than two axles and four wheel drive have drum brakes on all axles.

On the transmission side stood a 16- speed manual gearbox as well as a hydro- actuated automatic transmission, also with 16 courses to choose from.

Engines

All Actros engines were homologated at the start according to Euro 2 emissions standard, and later to Euro 3, first applied here new series OM 500 OM 501 LA received the designations for the V6 engine and OM 502 LA for the V8. The new engine family uses a common building block for key components back ( as pistons, connecting rods, etc.). Fuel supply

New to this series is the direct injection after the pump - line-nozzle principle ( PLD), an improvement of the principle of plug-in pumps used for decades. In this case, each cylinder has its own injector pump which is driven by a separate cam on the camshaft.

The fuel supply to the plug-in pumps via a mechanical vane pump, which is combined with the power steering pump to form a unit (tandem pump) and driven via the shaft of the air compressor from the engine. There is an electromagnetic valve which is controlled by the motor control ( MR) for each individual injection pump. This makes it possible to determine the respective injection time and the injection time depends on the operating state of the MR. The only introduced in 2002 335 kW version of the V6 - cylinder OM 501 LA already took carried out in MP 2 measures in increasing output in advance. This power setting was therefore transferred to the facelift model unchanged.

Facelift 2003 ( Actros MP 2)

Besides the revised engines, the facelift included in models to 335 kW ( 456 hp ), a new, lighter rear axle ( HL 6), as well as some new extras. Euro -4 and Euro - 5 engines

In 2004, new engines were again presented for the Actros ( henceforth OM 541 and OM 542 V6 V8). As the first manufacturer Mercedes- Benz unveiled engines that exhaust emission standard Euro 4 or Euro 5 corresponded. By 2007, sold more than 500,000 Mercedes Actros, the first BlueTec5 Actros reached a mileage of one million kilometers. Facelift 2008 ( Actros MP 3)

On 31 March 2008 the second facelift of the series, the Mercedes Actros MP 3 internally (Model Project 3 ) is referred to appeared. Exterior

Second generation ( since 2011 )

Technology

The technique of this model was largely developed from scratch. This applies both to the motors as well as for the interpretation of the frame and chassis components. Several new ancillaries with demand- dependent control to reduce fuel consumption and wear.

Looking at a clean guidance of the rear axle, the developers replaced the Zweibalg air suspension previously used against a four-bellow system. It increases the carrying capacity of the axle and ensures a faster and more precise response from the suspension. The new water - secondary retarder uses the engine cooling water as a lubricant and for the braking torque. Safety and comfort features

PowerShift 3

Buyer can choose between two different driving modes. The Economy program includes the Manual driving modes, standard and economy. The Economy mode dispenses with the function of the kickdown and uses in permanently activated EcoRoll mode, the fuel cut. Engines

Mercedes- Benz is offering the Actros with in-line six -cylinder common -rail engines with 7.7 (OM 936 LA), 10.7 (OM 470 LA), 12.8 (OM 471 LA) and 15.6 liters of displacement ( OM 473 LA) in 16 of wattages. Cabs

For the first time eleven different cab variants are available for the Actros, which have an exterior width of 2.30 meters or 2.50 meters.
