Mercedes-Benz OM 660

The engine type OM 660 ³ is a three-cylinder diesel engine in-line configuration and a displacement of 799 cm. The mounting of the engine was from 1998, first in the Mercedes- Benz plant in Berlin, since 2007, the OM 660 is mounted in the Thuringian Kölleda. The final assembly is done on behalf of Smart by ThyssenKrupp Automotive in one of the four branches of the cross-shaped smart plant in Lorraine.

The engine has a turbocharger with a boost pressure of up to 0.8 bar, two valves per cylinder and one camshaft in the cylinder head.

The OM 660 DE LA 8 has a cylinder bore of 65.5 mm and a stroke of 79 mm.

With a power output of 30 kW originally (41 hp) at 4200 min-1, he is one of the less powerful and efficient passenger car production engines. The equipped with this engine smart car ( coupe and convertible two-seater Roadster model ) carry at the rear, the term CDI, which for all vehicles with common rail direct injection is used in Mercedes -Benz. The internal model designation OM 660 is derived from the oil motor and a far partly chronologically consecutive numbering used in Mercedes vehicles for diesel engines.

The engine is a so-called block engine. Interlocked with the motor, the transmission, which is an electrically controlled and programmable by different software features in several variants and part -to-use automatic transmission. The principle construction costs equal suffrage automatic versions of the same engine block concept are marketed as superior and sold to end customers for a significant additional cost.

A criticism of this drive concept was in the early years of the sluggish smart switching behavior of the automatic transmission. Changes to the gearbox design can be considered as constructively solved this issue now.

After the elimination of the three-liter cars of the VW Group (VW Lupo 3L diesel, Audi A2 TDI) is the smart motor with a nominal fuel consumption of 3.3 liters of diesel per 100 km, the most fuel-efficient ( according to the state in mid-2007 ) car - series engine in current production.

For the 2007 edition, launched the "Smart ForTwo " with 20 more inches in length, the performance of the small diesel engine was increased (54 hp) to 33 kW ( 45 hp) and in the course of model refinement from model year 2011 to 40 kW. The increase in output takes place on a new common-rail injection system with a minimum pressure of 1600 bar injector. With an output of less than 90 grams of CO2, this engine type is well positioned in the current environmental debate.

Like the smart petrol engine M 160 ( also developed by Mercedes -Benz ), the OM 660 offered by the supplier Ecofly as an aircraft engine for ultralight and light aircraft as well as for motor sailer. Among other things, he comes in the B & F FK 9 are used. For this was of Ecofly with the support of Mercedes -Benz, a complete electronic conversion kit developed. With the model variant ' FK9 smart ' the B & F FK 9 Vertriebs GmbH was also the first time as standard an ultralight aircraft with smart engines at the company B & F Technik.
