Mercedes Bresso

Bresso ( born July 12, 1944 in Sanremo) is an Italian politician and first Vice - President of the Committee of the Regions. She is a member of the center-left party Partito Democratico. After the election for President of the Piedmont region, she joined in 2005 as a member of the European Parliament back; they remained President until 2010. Gianni Rivera moved then for them to the European Parliament after.

Career

Bresso was born in 1944 in San Remo, Imperia in Liguria.

In 1969, she holds a doctorate in economics; Since 1973 she is a professor of economics at the Institute of the Faculty of Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Turin.

Since 1989 Bresso is an active member of the Democrats of the Sinistra. From 1985 to 1995 she was in the Piedmont Regional Government Regional Minister for Building and Urban Planning ( Assessore Regionale per la Pianificazione Territorial ) from 1995 to 2004 she was President of the Province of Turin.

Since 2002 she has been deputy chairman of the AICCRE; 2000-2004 she was Chair of the World Federation of United Cities and 2004-2005 co-founder and president of the organization Cités et governorates locaux university.

From April 2005 to October 2008 she was president of the Union of European Federalists ( UEF) ( in Germany: European Union Germany ). Was succeeded by Andrew Duff.

In February 2010, she was elected as the first President of the Committee of the Regions. Your two and a half year term ended in August 2012. Since then she is the first vice president of the CoR.
