Mercedes (Corrientes)

Mercedes is a city in the center of the province of Corrientes in Argentina with about 35,000 inhabitants ( INDEC 2001). It is the capital of the eponymous departments Mercedes.

Location

Mercedes is 700 km from the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. The village is located about 100 km off the Brazilian border. The distance to Corrientes in direction north-north -west is about 200 km. At the southern shores of the protection and wetland Esteros del Ibera is 40 km to the north. Near the town is Itá pucu, a natural monument made ​​of stone.

History

The official founding of the city took place on behalf of Governor Pedro Ferré in 1832. Originally called the place Paí Ubre (from the Guaraní ). In 1835 he was renamed Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes.
