Mercer County (Illinois)

The Mercer County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 16,434 inhabitants and a population density of 11.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Aledo.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern Illinois on the Mississippi River, which forms the border with Iowa. It has an area of 1453 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water surface. At the Mercer County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Mercer County was on January 13, 1825 as a free designated - formed territory - but in reality populated by Indians. It was named for Hugh Mercer (1726-1777), a general in the Continental Army, who fell at the Battle of Princeton.
