Merck Index

The Merck Index is a reference for material properties of the most important chemicals, drugs and biochemical substances. In the current edition, it contains over 10,000 monographs on single substances or drug classes. In the appendix, see monographs on name reactions of organic chemistry. It is published since 1889 by Inc. Merck & Co.. In April 2013, the 15th edition (ISBN 978-1849736701 ), which is also available as a paid service on the Internet appeared.

Each monograph in the Merck index usually contains:

  • The CAS number
  • Alternative names, synonyms, common names, and the name according to IUPAC
  • Molecular and structural formula
  • Molar mass
  • Elemental composition in% ( two decimal places)
  • A description of the appearance of the substance
  • Melting point or boiling point
  • Solubility in the main solvent
  • References for the synthesis
  • The therapeutic categories
