Mercurey

Mercurey is a commune with 1271 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Saône -et -Loire in Burgundy.

History

Colonized the territory from Mercurey was in prehistoric times. The place name - derived from the Roman god Mercurius - suggests a Roman settlement; near the Via Agrippa was. The church today grew out of a merger of the former municipality of Val- d'Or - Bourgneuf with the community Mercurey in 1971.

Viniculture

The appellation Mercurey comprises approximately 100 hectares of vineyards in the area Côte Chalonnaise. Open to the communities Bourgneuf -Val- d'Or, Mercurey and Saint -Martin- sous -Montaigu. Here storable good red wines from Pinot noir, with shares of Pinot gris and Pinot Liébault are almost exclusively. At about ten percent of white wine from the Chardonnay grape is vinified with proportions of Pinot blanc. The appellation has about 30 Premiers Crus ( Clos du Roi, Champs Martin, Clos l' évêque, Clos des Montaigu ... ).

Mercurey is twinned with the town of Genappe in Wallonia ( Belgium). With Sizzano in Piedmont (Italy ) is a treaty of friendship.
