Mercury-Atlas 1

Mercury - Atlas 1 ( MA-1 ) was a suborbital test flight of the Mercury capsule. On the rocket apparatus was dispensed with in this unmanned mission. The capsule had functioning engines for the separation of the Atlas rocket, the re-entry rockets were only dummies. 58 seconds after the start broke the launcher in about 9 km altitude. The rocket and the capsule then hit hard in the Atlantic Ocean, after which the capsule broke and sank. She was salvaged with parts of the rocket and reconstructed for study purposes.

The capsule reached a maximum height of about 13 km, her weight was 1154 kg. The serial number of the rocket, Atlas 50 -D. The capsule used was known as the Mercury spacecraft # 4 Parts of the capsule can be seen in the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, Hutchinson, Kansas today.
