Mercury-Atlas 3

The mission Mercury - Atlas 3 was an unmanned test flight as part of the Mercury program.

Although the flight was unmanned, all systems were so functional, as would an astronaut on board. The flight was normal, to 40 seconds, the rocket came off the course after the start. Due to a software error, the rocket was not inclined to the east, but still flew straight up. An engine failure would be a danger to the surroundings as well as for the Cape Canaveral itself So you decided to blow up the rocket, but the capsule wanted to save using the escape tower.

The lifeguard tower worked perfectly and brought the capsule to an altitude of eight kilometers. The capsule landed safely and could be used again the next flight Mercury - Atlas 4. Of the launch vehicle a little piece was found. This was the first and only application of the rescue storm as part of the Mercury program.
