Mercury Bay

The Mercury Bay is a large V-shaped bay on the eastern Pacific coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. The mouth of the bay is about 10 km wide and 10 km deep.

In the middle of the bay, the bay narrows to a narrow passage, behind the ' Whitianga Harbour, a natural harbor formed with a plurality of arms, the other 6 km stretches in the country. On the north side of the constriction, the village of Whitianga. A ferry crosses the strait after Cook's Beach. Other places around the bay are Kaimarama and Coroglen.

State Highway 25 runs around the bay and Whitanga. To the north and south of the mouth are several small islets. The Mercury Islands lie about 10 km to the north.

In the bay open several small rivers which have their catchment area in the Coromandel Range, including the Mahakirau and Kaimarama River, Ounuora, Waiwara, Kapowai and Whanuakite River.

The bay is appreciated by sports fishermen, it can be caught here the Marlin. In the bay there is also a yacht club, the Mercury Bay Yacht Club, which in 1988 was the challenger in New Zealand's first Challenge for the America 's Cup.

At the south-western shore of the outer part of the bay is the place Cooks Beach. A stone plinth commemorates the landing of James Cook and his observation of the transit of Mercury.
