Mercury selenide is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of selenides.

Occurrence

Mercury selenide occurs naturally as the mineral Tiemannit.

Production and representation

Mercury selenide can be obtained by multi-step reaction of nitric acid with selenium and mercury (II ) oxide.

Alternatively, the direct synthesis of the elements is possible at around 600 ° C.

Properties

Mercury selenide is a purple black, from shiny metallic crystals of existing solid. In nitrogen, carbon dioxide or in a vacuum it is sublimed without decomposition at 600 ° C. It has under normal conditions a crystal structure of zinc blende type (a = 6.07 Å, space group, point group ). From a pressure of 0.75 GPa it goes through a sodium chloride and from 28 GPa in a tetragonal structure in a Cinnabar, from 16 GPa.

Use

Mercury selenide is used as a semiconductor.
