Merdeka Palace

The Istana Merdeka ( in German Palace of freedom ) is a palace complex in Jakarta, Indonesia.

History of the building

Its construction began in 1796 when Pieter Gerardus van Overstratens Appointed Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies and the building was completed 1804. Initially, the building was used as a resort for a Dutch businessman.

In 1821 it was sold to the Dutch colonial administration.

This building was used temporarily as the official residence of the Governor General or the Indonesian president after independence in 1946. Resided So in 1950 the first Indonesian President Sukarno in the building. After Sukarno, the palace was no longer used as an official residence, but continued as the official place of work.
