Geography

Geographical location

Merdingen located on the western scarp of the Tuniberg, a flat ridge in the upper Rhine plane. An exceptionally mild climate and fertile loess soils provide conditions for the cultivation of wine, fruit and asparagus.

History

Presumably the local situation was already settled by the Celts. From the 1st century AD Romans lived here in estates and operated fruit and vegetable cultivation. The settlement of the Romans are substantiated by archaeological remains of a Roman bath house backed up, which is north of Merdingen to visit towards Wasenweiler. The village Merdingen is a foundation of the Alemanni in the 5th or 6th century. Other documented references date back to 1137 and 1154 as part of a goods donation to the monastery of St. Peter and in 1139 in a papal bull for the Prince-Bishopric of Basel.
