Mere is a borough of Erpe -Mere at the Molenbeek- Ter Erpenbeek in Denderstreek in the Flanders region. It lies in the southeast of the province of East Flanders and belongs to Arrondissement Aalst. The borough is bordered by the boroughs Erpe, Ottergem, Bambrugge and Aaigem and the municipalities of Haaltert ( borough Haaltert ) and Aalst ( borough Nieuwerkerken ). Mere has 5033 inhabitants ( 1 January 2003) and an area of 5.77 km ². The population density is 873 inh. / Km ².

History

In the Jerusalem street ( a street ) on the opposite side of the windmill are the remains of a Roman villa have been found ( on the hill opposite the Merelputstraat ). Mere was mentioned in 1003 in a document as Meren. Perhaps the name comes from the numerous swamps ( Meren in Dutch) in the vicinity of the village. At the beginning of the 19th century, the village had 1874 inhabitants and the end of the 19th century, it had 2942 inhabitants. At that time there was a windmill, three water mills and a factory that was work 1,000 people. Every year around 300 people went to France to help as seasonal workers during the harvest.

Geography

In the football club FC Mere Mere, the (2012 ) is currently active in the fourth Provincial of the Province of East Flanders plays.

Tourism

By the Mere Molenbeekroute runs. The Molenbeekroute is a bicycle route, primarily known are the mills of the community Erpe -Mere and two streams, both of which bear the name Molenbeek ( mill creek ).
