Merefa

Merefa (Ukrainian and Russian Мерефа ) is a city in the Ukraine in the Kharkiv Oblast with about 20,000 inhabitants ( 2013). The city has a railway station and a glass industry.

Geography

Maerefa is located on the highway M 18, a leg of the European Route 105, 22 km southwest of Kharkiv.

It is divided into the city proper and the settlement Selekzijne ( Селекційне )

History

Merefa was founded in 1595 and in 1938 Merefa was given city rights. From October 1941 to September 5, 1943, the city troops of the Wehrmacht was occupied. In May 1942, found at Merefa the Second Battle of Kharkov, one of the last victorious battles of encirclement of the Wehrmacht, instead.
