Geography

Geographical location

Merklingen is located on the plateau of the Swabian Alb, about 20 kilometers northwest of Ulm, between Geislingen and Blaubeuren.

Community structure

Merklingen, consisting of the main village and the hamlet Widderstall, has remained an independent municipality with its own administration, despite the Baden-Württemberg district reform in the 1970s; she is a member of Gemeindeverwaltungsverband Laichinger Alb, is owned by the special purpose association Albwasserversorgungsgruppe II, Laichingen, and is a member of the inter-municipal data center Ulm- Wiblingen -Reutlingen ( KIRU ).

History

In the year 861 we find the first written mention of Merklingen as Marche Lingen in the founding document of the monastery Wiesensteig.

Since 1482 the place belonged to the territory of the imperial city of Ulm.

Merklingen came in 1810 with the Kingdom of Württemberg and the upper office Blaubeuren was assigned, which rose in 1938 in the district of Ulm.

The hamlet Widderstall was born on July 6, 1209 in one of Pope Innocent III. and 13 cardinals signed certificate first mentioned. Coat of justification

Merklingen had an old bleach Häusle which had the monitor for the laid out on the lawn of laundry to the property. Since this bleaching Häusle is considered old landmark of Merklingen, it was used in heraldic correct form in the local coat of arms as heraldic content. The brick round mountain in the sign is green-silver symbolize the colors of the grass and lying thereon laundry. For the sake of simplicity, only the color pair was green-silver used.
