Geography

Geographical location

Merklingen is located on the plateau of the Swabian Alb, about 20 kilometers northwest of Ulm, between Geislingen and Blaubeuren.

The district is about 21.31 km ².

Neighboring communities

The neighboring communities of Merklingen are (clockwise from north): Nellingen, thorn town, Laichingen (all Alb- Donau-Kreis ), the High City, Drackenstein, Bad Ditzenbach (all district Göppingen).

Community structure

Merklingen, consisting of the main village and the hamlet Widderstall, has remained an independent municipality with its own administration, despite the Baden-Württemberg district reform in the 1970s; she is a member of Gemeindeverwaltungsverband Laichinger Alb, is owned by the special purpose association Albwasserversorgungsgruppe II, Laichingen, and is a member of the inter-municipal data center Ulm- Wiblingen -Reutlingen ( KIRU ).

Climate

The climate is typical of the Middle Kuppenalb: sunny relatively dry summer, fog in autumn, cold snowy winters.

History

In the year 861 we find the first written mention of Merklingen as Marche Lingen in the founding document of the monastery Wiesensteig.

Since 1482 the place belonged to the territory of the imperial city of Ulm.

Merklingen came in 1810 with the Kingdom of Württemberg and the upper office Blaubeuren was assigned, which rose in 1938 in the district of Ulm.

The hamlet Widderstall was born on July 6, 1209 in one of Pope Innocent III. and 13 cardinals signed certificate first mentioned. Innocent III. took the Premonstratensian Ursberg with his possessions, which also includes a cloister near the present Widderstall belonged, under protection. In the 13th century, the monastery was already back on the court, the Reopened Aries Stalls began in the early 19th century. Coat of Arms Description

In the green shields a silver house, brick covered with a door between two windows, all in silver. The cottage stands on green-silver brick round mountain in the sign.

Coat of justification

Merklingen had an old bleach Häusle which had the monitor for the laid out on the lawn of laundry to the property. Since this bleaching Häusle is considered old landmark of Merklingen, it was used in heraldic correct form in the local coat of arms as heraldic content. The brick round mountain in the sign is green-silver symbolize the colors of the grass and lying thereon laundry. For the sake of simplicity, only the color pair was green-silver used.

Economy and infrastructure

Merklingen has good commercial infrastructure with numerous medium-sized businesses at the site as well as retail.

Traffic

Merklingen is through the Federal Highway 8 (Stuttgart - Munich) connected to the national road network (junction 61).

The municipality will be completed by 2020, the new Wendlingen -Ulm, among other things, with the tunnel ram stable.

Educational institutions

In Merklingen itself is a primary school. In the neighboring village of Nellingen high school is located, Realschule and Gymnasium can be visited in the city Laichingen.

From June 2001 to November 2012 was the model train show Merklingen, a 400 -square-foot model railroad in H0 ( 1:87 ) with a track total length of about 700 m.

Clubs

In addition to the biggest club in Merklingen, the Workers' Samaritan Federation, still there are many other clubs. The Turnverein 1862 eV Merklingen ( TVM) is also a considerable number of members. Other clubs are, for example, the Musikverein Merklingen eV, the Riding and Driving Club, church music, the Horticultural Association and the glee club.

Specialty

Merklinger Nudla are a Merklinger Back specialty and are served from breakfast to dinner, for sweet and hearty fare. Nudla are made from flour, lard, yeast, an egg, milk and a little salt and sugar.
