Merksplas is a Belgian municipality located in the province of Antwerp in Flanders and lies on the border with the Netherlands. Merksplas has 8576 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012) at 44.56 km ², which corresponds to a population density of 192 inhabitants per km ². The town's landmark is the " Spetser ", a sculpture by Kris Druyts, which stands on the market square. From 1824 to 1993 there were in Merksplas a prison, the building is now partly used to house illegal immigrants.
