The Merkys ( weißruss. Meretsch, poln Mereczanka ), is a 203 km long river, which originates in Belarus and several km along the border with Lithuania flows. The greater part, 185 km, is located in Lithuania.
Geography
The Merkys flows over 37 km through the territory of the National Park Dzūkija. It is the largest river in the region Dzūkija. In the course of the town Merkinė and some südlitauische ethnographic villages located. The river flows into the Neman.
Tributaries are Ūla, Salcia and Varene.
Practicability
The river is popular among paddle clubs and riders. Since the Merkys flows through the National Park Dzūkija, there is a limiting quota and licensing system for canoeists. Therefore, permission must be clarified in advance and procure at tourism offices or local agencies.
