Merl Saunders

Merl Saunders ( also Merle Saunders, born February 14, 1934 in San Mateo, California, † 24 October 2008) was an American organist.

He grew up in the immediate vicinity of Haight-/Ashbury-Viertels in San Francisco. His musical roots are in jazz and rock. He worked with Harry Belafonte, Lionel Hampton, Miles Davis, BB King, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, Papa John Creach, Bonnie Raitt and Jerry Garcia. With the latter he formed a friendship of many years, sprang from the various publications since 1969. Despite his close ties to the Grateful Dead, he joined only three times with the band together. Since the late 1980s, Saunders engaged in environmentally politically.
