Pharmacology

See carbapenems, unlike imipenem, meropenem is stable against dehydropeptidase I.

Spectrum of activity

The spectrum of activity is greater in the range of Gram-negative bacteria compared to imipenem.

Side effects

The side effects are similar to that of the penicillins and cephalosporins. It can, however, also epileptic seizures.
