Merritt Iceland is an island of the same name and a census -designated place (CDP ) in Brevard County in the U.S. state of Florida with 34,743 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

On the island of the Cape Canaveral lies with the space stations Kennedy Space Center NASA and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station of the U.S. Air Force as well as the nature reserve of the type of a National Wildlife Refuges Merritt Iceland National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore, a nature reserve and recreation area with 40 km of sandy beaches. The island is the west by the Indian River ( Intracoastal Waterway ) and is bordered to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. It is crossed by the Florida State Roads A1A, 3, 402, 520 and 528 ( Martin Andersen Beachline Expressway, a toll road ).

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 34,743 inhabitants distributed to 17,036 households. The population density was 760.2 inh. / Km ². 88.7 % of the population were white, 4.9% African American, 0.5% Native American and 2.2% Asian Americans. 1.1% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.6% in different ethnic groups. 6.1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 34.2 % of all households lived in 26.2 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 65.7 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.33 persons and the average family size is 2.82 people.

21.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 17.4% were 20-39 years old, 33.4 % were 40-59 years old and 27.7 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 48 years. 49.0 % of the population were male and 51.0 % female.

The average annual income was $ 58,528, while 9.5 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 93.27 % of the population spoke Spanish 3.61% and 3.12% had a different mother tongue.
