Mersch

Mersch ( Luxembourgish Miersch ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the administrative center of the canton of Mersch.

Geographical location

The municipality is located in Mersch Gutland, in the Alzette valley north of the capital.

Community Development

The 50 -hectare terrain between the railway line and Alzette, today are still the slaughterhouse and the old Agrocenter on, is to be redesigned.

Traffic

Mersch has an express stop on the Luxembourg Northern Railway. On Mersch Station regional trains stop to France and Belgium.

Attractions

  • In Pettingen are the ruins of an old moated castle, which can be visited.
  • In Mersch is on the Kronenberg ( Lux Krounebierg ) an obelisk that would show the center of the Grand Duchy. As a National Monument to the 100 - year celebration of the independence of Luxembourg built, it was torn down in World War II and rebuilt after the war in a new form. A section of the original monument (in the form of a column ) can be visited on site.

Culture

  • Mersch has a regionally important cultural center, called the House of Culture.
  • In Mersch is the seat of the National Literature Centre, the Centre National de Littérature.
  • Mersch has a public library with an Internet room, the Mierscher Lies House.
