MÄ“rsrags

Mērsrags ( German: Marquis ) is a city in the west of Latvia, located on the coast of the Gulf of Riga.

Here is a port for the export of timber and fish processing industry. The name Mērsrags is derived from a distinctive rocky promontory. In the vicinity there is a well-known lighthouse was prefabricated in France in 1875 and incorporated in its operation.

The area is part of the Natural Park Engure lake whose shores are an important breeding area for rare bird species.

As of 2008, the municipalities Mērsrags and Roja formed a common administrative unit before the municipal council in 2010 decided to form their own " novads ".
