Mervelier is a municipality in the district Delémont the canton of Jura in Switzerland. The former German name Morsch Wiler is no longer used today.

Geography

Mervelier is located on 556 m above sea level. M., 13 km east from the cantonal capital Delémont ( straight line ). The former road and creek lines village extends along the scolding Bach (French Schelten ) in Val Terbi, the easternmost section of the Basin Dels Berger, a broad valley in the Jura folds.

The area of ​​9.7 km ² large municipality area includes both sides of Bach's scolding a portion of the intensively farmed level of Dels Berger basin. The creek drains the area west of the Birs. Population

With 527 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Mervelier one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Jura. Of the 92.8 % inhabitants are French-speaking and German-speaking 5.3 % (as of 2000). The population of Mervelier amounted in 1850 to 490 residents in 1990 to 433 inhabitants. During the 20th century, various fluctuations were recorded. Economy

History

First mention is Mervelier 1184 as Morswilre; 1489 appeared the name Maertwiler. The village belonged to the provost Mervelier Moutier- Grandval and retained even after the Reformation, the Catholic faith at. From 1797 to 1815 it belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern to the district of Moutier. Attractions

The parish church, built in 1770-1772, is just outside the village. It shows an architectural style in the transition from late Baroque to Neoclassicism, 1841-1842 was rebuilt and renovated in the 1970s.
