Mervin Tran

Mervin Tran ( born September 22, 1990 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada ) is a Canadian figure skater who starts in pair skating. By 2012, he started for Japan.

Career

Mervin Tran was born in Regina. His parents were refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia. They encouraged him to go to hockey. By chance, he came into a hockey camp at the age of four years to figure skating. At age 13, he landed his first triple Salchow. 2007 Richard Gauthier sought a pair skater as a partner for the Japanese Narumi Takahashi. Trans coach Bruno Marcotte advised him Tran, who was originally a single runner. After a trial with Takahashi Tran stayed with Gauthier in Montreal. Together they train in St. Leonard and supported by the Japanese Skating Federation.

In 2008, Takahashi and Tran first Japanese champion in pair skating. 2010 and 2011 they stood on the podium at the Junior World Championships. In 2010 she debuted already in Four Continents Championships and 2011 World Championships.

At the 2012 World Championships in Nice Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran won a surprise bronze medal. It was the first World Championship medal for Japan in the pairs figure skating.

The couple has since separated. Tran is currently running with Natasha Purich with which he starts for Canada.
