Merzweiler

Merzweiler is a municipality in the district of Kusel, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Lauter corners.

Geography

Merzweiler is located on Jeckenbach in the Western Palatinate between the Palatinate Forest and the Hunsrück. To the west is boring, in the north Hoppstädten, in the northeast and southeast Kappeln is Grumbach.

History

1756 ground plan of a temple was a Mars statue found near the place.

In Merzweiler the grandparents of the robber John Buckler (1777-1803), called Schinderhannes lived. The grandfather Otto Philip Buckler was born 1709 in Hilscheid in Idarwald at Thalfang, working as executioners and knacker, and died 1777 in Merzweiler. The grandmother Mary Magdalene Riemenschneider (1738-1770) came from Merzweiler. John Buckler (1758-1803), the father of Schinderhannes, was born in Merzweiler.

1816 the place with the Principality of Lichtenberg, a newly exclave of the duchy of Saxe -Coburg -Saalfeld, respectively in 1826 the duchy of Saxe -Coburg and Gotha. With this he fell to Prussia in 1834, which the district Sankt Wendel created from this area. After separation of the main part of the newly created Saar was built in 1920 the remainder circle St. Wendel - Baumholder, to which the place belonged until 1937, when he was incorporated into the district of Birkenfeld. In 1969, he was reclassified in the district of Kusel.
