2 - (N -morpholino) ethanesulfonic acid, also abbreviated to MES, a buffer substance synthetically produced in the life sciences is frequently used. The pKa of MES 6.1 (25 ° C), the buffer region is 5.8 to 6.5 pH.

MES is not metabolized by bacteria and eukaryotic cells, it is therefore often used to produce weakly acidic buffered culture media, for example, plant tissue at pH = 5.8.

For the preparation of sterile solutions containing MES solutions are sterile because the substance is destroyed by autoclaving. Another possibility is to put the solution under sterile conditions.
