As the mesangium consisting of the extracellular matrix of connective tissue stem is referred to in anatomy, setting out the glomerular capillary loops. In this connective tissue cells are embedded, are referred to as mesangial cells or Mesangiozyten. Since they are located inside the renal corpuscle ( intraglomerulär ), they are also referred to as intraglomeruläre mesangial cells. Mesangial cells are important for the function of the capillaries because they are contractile ( can contract ) support and the capillary walls and phagocytosis are capable of.

The intraglomerular mesangial cells to be distinguished from the extraglomerular mesangial cells, which are localized at the vascular pole of the renal corpuscle outside. The extraglomerular mesangial cells are a component of the juxtaglomerular apparatus. They are named after the Belgian pathologist Norbert Goormaghtigh as sentinel cells.
