Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 28 to 35 millimeters. The two " sibling species " Mesapamea secalis and Mesapamea secalella, which were united until 1983 in a kind of ( Mesapamea secalis ) can be distinguished only by a genital examination. Both species have a highly variable coloration. The only form of M. secalis externally which clearly differs from M. secalella, is the color version with a white root and Saumfeld. The caterpillar of M. secalis has in contrast to the caterpillar of M. secalella no broad, dark, cephalic stripe on the neck plate.

Dissemination

The grain - Halmeule is home to almost all over Europe. In the east, the range extends to the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. In the south, the species occurs in north-west Africa, in Turkey and in northern Iran.

Way of life

The very common moth flies from June to September. The caterpillar, which is developed mainly in the interior of a blade of grass, to the ordinary orchard grass ( Dactylis glomerata ) and pipe fescue ( Festuca arundinacea ), but also in other types of grasses ( Poaceae ), overwinters. The species is attracted to the artificial light sources.
