History

Gristow and Gristower Wiek

The district Gristow was first mentioned already in 1248 as Cristogh. Its name etymologically could not be clarified until today. Gristow originated as a small Slavic Angersdorf and was since the 13th century belonged to a branch of the princes of Rügen, the family of Gristow. This landed gentry in the 14th century sold their lands gradually to the town of Greifswald. From the village is also the name Gristower Wiek, a small shallow bay derives on the west coast of the Bay of Greifswald. The triangular -shaped bay is only 2.7 square kilometers and has depths of less than two meters to a maximum of four meters on. Your upstream are the Riems which became internationally known through the present on her research center for animal diseases " Friedrich Loeffler ", and lying near her spars Big Werder, Small Werder, Reffbrinks, Brink mountain and the Fahrenbrink already connected to the mainland as bird sanctuaries.

This section of the shallow coastal lagoon with the Gristower Wiek has been exposed for centuries storm floods. The storm surge of January 17, 1396 is said to have created the Wiek only in its present form. At that time the old road between Stralsund and Greifswald was destroyed by the floods and impassable and the customs revenue office at the local bridge in the area. The following year ( 1397 ) was issued by the sovereign namely the right to build a new highway above Mesekenhagen and Kowall by Reinberg the town of Greifswald. This section of road thus one of the historical precursor to the later part of the long-distance or federal highway was 96 storm flood altered by destruction again and again the inner part of Wiek, such as in the years 1904, 1914, 1949 and 1954, the coastal dynamic processes are not completed. In the western coastal area of the Bay of Greifswald including Gristower Wiek special weather phenomena of meaning and observed are: "Most of the storms blow ... from the southern to western directions and let particularly in the western lagoon for hours or days with up to 1 m. a north sea like Watt arise .. below sea level. they are going from northern to eastern directions, so the water level rises and storm surges are the result. Especially the exposed shallow coastal sections in the southwest of the bay then flooded by the waters of the Baltic " (R. Bendt 1995 S. 4).

In Gristow, which has always been connected with the sea and fishing - a small port is available - has remained until very recently, the old Pomeranian custom of the annual Tonnenabschlagens in the month of May or for Thanksgiving, the three best riders to " floor, bars and ton King " will be chosen. That this tradition dates back to the time of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), when the Swedes occupied Pomerania and the local fishermen had to pay tribute in this form.
