Meslay-du-Maine

Meslay- du- Maine is a commune with 2757 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) iim Mayenne in the Pays de la Loire. It belongs to the district Laval and is capital of the canton Meslay- du- Maine.

Camp de Meslay- du- Maine

From the beginning of the Second World War to the fall of France (September 2, 1939 to June 17, 1940 ) was located in Meslay a camp in which more than 2,000 German and Austrian civilians, mostly men from the Paris region, were interned. The camp was evacuated in the face of the German advance Arschs on 17 June 1940, the prisoners were only direction Angers, then moved towards Albi. Among the prisoners were:

  • Johnny Friedlaender (1912-1992), printmaker and etcher, returned after the war to Paris
  • Norbert Mills (1909-1981), resistance fighters, he managed to escape to the United States
