Flag cichlid ( Mesonauta festivus )

The flag cichlid ( Mesonauta festivus ) is a freshwater ornamental fish from the family of cichlids ( Cichlidae ). He comes from rivers of the Amazon basin, in particular the Rio Paraná Basin, in the South American countries Brazil, Peru and Bolivia.

Flag cichlids are 12 to 15 cm tall, with the females compared to the males remain smaller. The males can be recognized by the slightly more protruding "nose". The animals are relatively peaceful for cichlids and can be socialized well with Segelflossern for example.

The offspring of the flag cichlid in the aquarium is possible. The animals are open breeders operate the brood and guard their 300 to 500 eggs per clutch, and later the hatchlings. The fry can be easily reared on Artemia.
