Mesotrione is an active ingredient for plant protection and a chemical compound from the group of cyclohexane derivatives.

Production and representation

Mesotrione can be obtained by reaction of 1,3- cyclohexanedione with 2- nitro-4- methylsulphonylbenzoyl chloride.

Properties

Mesotrione is a yellowish solid.

Use

Mesotrione is used as an active ingredient in pesticides. It was discovered at Syngenta in 1977 and acts through the inhibition of 4- hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD, EC 1.13.11.27 ), an important enzyme in the biosynthesis of carotenoids. It was brought to market in 2001. A derivative of mesotrione is nitisinone ( NTBC ), structurally similar is also Sulcotrione.

The active ingredient mesotrione was approved in the European Union for use as herbicide in 2003.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland pesticides are approved with this drug. The most important field of application is the production of maize.
