Messa per Rossini

The Messa per Rossini is a Requiem, which was created as a joint composition of thirteen Italian composer.

In the wake of the death of Gioachino Rossini on November 13, 1868 Giuseppe Verdi invited the twelve most important composers of Italy one of his time, to participate in the community composition of a Requiem Mass for Rossini. The premiere was to take place on the first anniversary of the death of Rossini, November 13, 1869 in Bologna. The Messa per Rossini was completed in September 1869, a performance was, however, not materialize because of adverse circumstances. The manuscript came then organized into oblivion.

Giuseppe Verdi took his own contribution, the final Libera me, in revised form as the nucleus for the composition of his own Messa da Requiem. Similarly proceeded Buzzolla Antonio, Antonio Cagnoni, Pietro Platania and Teodulo Mabellini that their sentences in some could bring expanded and revised form to the performance.

The community composition was rediscovered in 1970 by David Rosen and premiered posthumously on September 11, 1988 by the Gächinger choir under the direction of Helmuth Rilling at the European Music Festival in Stuttgart and also released as a CD.
