Message-Signaled Interrupts

Message Signaled Interrupts (MSI ) are a type of interrupts available in computer systems with PCI 2.2 and higher. The MSI -capable devices call for a treatment is not by an electronic signal, but on messages that are written via the PCI bus to a particular address.

Important advantages of this type of interrupts are:

  • Devices can generate different interrupts ( News )
  • Interrupt sharing is avoided ( not a " fixed" number as for Interruptsignalleitungen )
  • No confirmation, thus faster
  • Peripheral bus (internal)
