Messier 54

Messier 54 (also known as NGC 6715 ) is a 8.4 like bright globular clusters with a surface area of 9.1 ' in the constellation Sagittarius, south of the star Sigma Sagittarii. M 54 is not easy to observe in Central Europe because of its southern location.

The globular cluster has gained special attention, since it is known that he does not belong to the globular cluster system of the Milky Way, but is associated with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. Since this galaxy, which is the nearest neighbor of our Milky Way after the Canis Major dwarf galaxy that was discovered only in 1993, Messier was 54 by then as globular clusters of the Milky Way. Together with Messier 79, which is associated with the Canis Major dwarf galaxy, he is therefore the longest known extragalactic globular clusters.
