Mesuximide (N ,2 -dimethyl-2 -phenyl- Suximid, trade name Petinutin ® ) is an anticonvulsant drug from the group of anticonvulsant drugs, which is used for long-term treatment of certain forms of epilepsy. It belongs to the group of chemically Suximide and is converted rapidly and almost completely to its active metabolite N- Desmethylmesuximid.

Areas of application

Mesuximide is used only as second choice in otherwise treatment-resistant epilepsy. Especially with absence seizures and epilepsy with complex partial seizures, but also associated with Lennox -Gastaut syndrome, it is used as an additional drug.

Side effects

Depending on the dose occur loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, hiccups, abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, photophobia, confusion, loss of balance, dizziness, and rarely a temporary decrease in white blood cells. Regardless dose may cause allergic skin reactions, behavioral changes and involuntary movement disorders.

Chemistry

The synthesis of the active ingredient is carried out according to a method described in the literature starting from acetophenone. Mesuximide is used as a racemic drug.
