The HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk (Russian ХК Металлург Магнитогорск ) is an ice hockey club established in 1950 the Russian city of Magnitogorsk. Magnitogorsk plays in the Kontinental Hockey League and plays its home games in the 7,500 -seat arena from Metallurg. The club colors are blue, red and white.

History

After the club was founded in 1950 had played in 1981, the fourth- highest division, and had managed this year the rise in the Perwaja League, the team has become one of the top teams in Russia.

First, the team was relegated as the third- placed Perwaja the league in 1990 to the second-class Wysschaja league. Just two seasons later was successful promotion to the top flight and, shortly after inclusion in the Super League. There the team in 1999, 2001 and 2007 Champion of Russia, as well as 1996, 1998 and 2004, was runner-up. In addition, in 1998 succeeded in winning the Cup competition.

At international level, Magnitogorsk was able to celebrate various achievements in the recent past. In 1999 the team secured first time winning the IIHF European Hockey League. The title could be defended successfully a year later. Furthermore won Metallurg. With the victory in the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2008, the team won the last edition of the competition, so she was automatically qualified for the Champions Hockey League 2008 / 09, and to the inaugural host the Spengler Cup 2005 Victoria Cup competing against the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League. Magnitogorsk lost the game despite a temporary 3-0 lead with 3:4.

In the 2008 /09 season Metallurg reached the final of the Champions Hockey League, as the team defeated the ZSC Lions from Switzerland to a 2-2 draw in the first leg in the return match with 0:5.
