Metcalfe County, Kentucky
Metcalfe County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Edmonton, which was named after Edmund P. Rogers, who donated the land to the city's founding available. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in southern Kentucky, is about 35 km from the state of Tennessee away and has an area of 754 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Hart County, Green County, Adair County, Cumberland County, Monroe County and Barren County.
History
Metcalfe County was formed on February 1, 1850 from parts of Adair County, Barren County, Cumberland County, Green County and Monroe County. It was named after Thomas Metcalfe, a governor, U.S. Senator and member of the U.S. Congress.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Metcalfe County 10,037 people in 4,016 households and 2,883 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.26 percent White, 1.64 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, and 0.13 percent from other races; 0.65 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.53 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,016 households out of which 32.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent of all households and 12.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.93.
Based on the county the population was spread from 24.6 percent population under 18 years, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 92.6 men statistically.
The median income for a household was 23,540 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family was $ 29,178. Males have a median income of $ 22,430, women $ 18,591. The per capita income was $ 13,236. 18.8 percent of families and 23.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 29.2 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 27.9 percent of those 65 years.
