Bennington and Shinoda took on 30 versions of the chorus for the song, where " each time before the previous version was scrapped, in search of something better ."

The lyrical idea for the play Breaking the Habit was already over five years old at the time of the recordings. When Mike Shinoda worked on a interlude, guitarist Brad Delson proposed and DJ Joseph Hahn, to make the musical interlude an entire song. The provisional title of the song was drawing, but was extended by Shinoda but when writing lyrics. The intro Foreword was taken after the completion of the entire rest of the album. The final song Numb was taken shortly before Linkin Park moved into the NRG Studios.

Music style

Compared with the previous three years earlier released album Hybrid Theory, Meteora shows pronounced effects of Rapcore ( Lying from You, Hit the Floor, Figure.09 ), Hip Hop ( Nobody's listening ) and electronic music ( Breaking the Habit ).
