Methanesulfonyl chloride ( mesyl chloride also ) is the acid chloride of methanesulfonic acid.

Production

The reaction of methane with thionyl chloride.

Properties

Methanesulfonyl chloride is a yellow, very difficult flammable liquid with a pungent odor, which is practically insoluble in water, decomposes in this, however. It has a dynamic viscosity of 1.97 mPas at 25 ° C.

Use

Of methanesulfonyl chloride is frequently used as a reagent in organic synthesis. As a rule, can be in nucleophilic substitutions hydroxyl groups of alcohols replace directly. Therefore, the first alcohol with methanesulfonyl chloride to methanesulfonate ( mesylate ) is implemented. The mesylate is a very good leaving group and can be substituted in the rule by a nucleophile.
