Valeric acid methyl ester ( IUPAC methylpentanoate, methyl valerate, trade name and Others Validol ) is the ester of valeric acid with the alcohol methanol. The colorless, flammable liquid has a fruity smell and is therefore used as a flavoring, also for food.
Natural occurrence and representation
In nature, the ester is present in small amounts in ripe pineapple and the jackfruit. The display is possible with methanol in good yield by acid-catalyzed esterification of valeric acid:
Use
Since the 16th century, the ester is used as a mild sedative, partly as a mixture Validolum with camphor; Since the 19th century the Validol also served as a remedy for seasickness. The main part of the valeric acid methyl ester produced is used as a fragrance in the fragrance industry.
